Innocent Bonke, a Lorient midfielder, has been picked as Wilfred Ndidi’s substitute in Nigeria’s team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Ghana.
Ndidi suffered a knee injury in Leicester City’s 2-1 defeat to Stade Rennes in the UEFA Conference League round of 16 on Thursday at Roazhon Park, requiring him to be replaced.
The Super Eagles had hoped that his injury would merely keep him out of the first leg in Ghana, but after testing by Leicester’s medical team, the player has been ruled out of the forthcoming international break, meaning he will miss the double-header against the Black Stars.
Bonke has taken his place in the team for the encounter, having made seven league appearances for Lorient in the French Ligue 1.
Since his debut in September 2021, the 26-year-old has only made two appearances for the Super Eagles.
The opening leg takes place at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday, March 25, with the return match four days later at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.
