Bob Marley once said, “when the music hits you, you feel no pain” but do you know there are
prominent musicians who were born blind but still achieved success and made an impact in the music industry. A different group of people was naturally born blind due to birth complications while some were through a disaster or other unfortunate circumstances.
The birth deformity is truly unbearable for the parents especially when it involves one that leaves a perpetual effect on the child. The stigma and discrimination are much unbearable considering how society reacts.
1. Stevie Wonder
On May 13, 1950, Stevie Wonder was born Stevland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, Michigan. He was born six weeks premature with retinopathy, an eye disease that was worsened when he received too much oxygen in an incubator, leading to blindness.
Wonder exhibited an early interest in the song, initially with a synagogue choir in Detroit, Michigan, where he and his family had pushed to when he was four years old, and later with a spectrum of devices, including the harmonica, piano, and drums, all of which he taught himself before age 10.
2. Cobhams Asuquo
Cobhams Asuquo is a Nigerian composer, a beats creator, and songwriter. He was signed with Sony ATV London as a songwriter. Cobham is one of the musicians who was born blind but has always been prosperous in the music industry. He wedded Veronica Olukanni in 2010 and they gave birth to their first son, David, who was accidentally born blind just like his father.
3. Chidinma Ekile
The beautiful lady is flourishing in the music industry in Nigeria, and she was first realized during her involvement in the “Project Fame West Africa,” a well-known Nigerian talented show for potential musicians to showcase their talent.
Chidenma opined, “I was born blind. I just couldn’t see for a few months. Ever since I sang about it, I have felt the need to help children who find themselves in such situations or even worse. So every time I travel to these places, I try to widen my love to these children”.
In December 2017, the disclosure was made by her and so has decided to inform the world that she was actually born blind during an exclusive interview with the Guardian newspaper.
