A/R: Boy drowns in ‘galamsey’ pit in attempt to save younger brother (VIDEO)

At Patriensa, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region, a 13-year-old boy drowned while trying to save his younger brother in an abandoned galamsey pit.

Residents claim he is one of four toddlers who have perished in the area’s over 100 abandoned trenches in the last three years.

Emmanuel Aboagye, the dead, died while attempting to save his nine-year-old sibling, Yaw. His father saved him in time, but the other brother was lost.

The father and the survivor told JoyNews about what happened at the scene.

“Aboagye, my brother, and I came here to get some water. “I slipped and fell into the water, and he rushed in to save me, but I later found out he perished,” said Yaw, a nine-year-old kid who was rescued.

“When I pulled him out of the water, he was still. “He was so feeble when he was ultimately retrieved but I had little hope he was still alive though many around him were insisting he was still alive,” the father told JoyNews. “I was told his senior brother, Aboagye, was also in the water but I couldn’t help him since I am not a strong swimmer.”

Shadrach Ofori, a member of the rescue squad, said the people in Patriensa anticipated more from the police.

“I’m quite upset because when the event occurred, my brother-in-law went to the Patriensa police station, and we were expecting one of the officers to come to the scene, but none did,” he added.

However, police in Patriensa said that the people reported missing children, but that they were told to conduct a search and report to the police later.
