In the Akuapem North Constituency of the Eastern Region, some disgruntled members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have boycotted the ongoing polling station executives and Electoral Area Coordinators election, citing national security intervention and rampant manipulation.
Disgruntled members, especially supporters of incumbent Member of Parliament Nana Ama Asiamah Dokua, spoke to the media, alleging that the election was marred by extensive anomalies and intrigues that violated the spirit of a free and fair election.
Owusu Afriyie, the constituency Youth organizer, claimed that some members of the party are unable to run for office because they broke the party’s rules by advocating for an independent candidate in the previous election.
He further said that despite protests, some candidates with forged nomination forms who were never scrutinized were allowed to run in the election.
The constituency Youth Organizer further said that members of the party regarded to be close associates of the incumbent MP Nana Asiamah Dokua had been intimidated by the deployment of national security operatives and military troops to the district.
On Friday, the unhappy members marched to the Koforidua High Court, pleading with the court to stop the election.
On Friday, its attorneys filed an application to prevent the party from holding elections for polling station directors and electoral area coordinators.
The national organizer of the ruling NPP, Sammy Awuku, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), is expected to fight the parliamentary primaries in Akuapem North Constituency.
Disgruntled members of the party believe that some of the party’s national executives are rigging the election process in his favor.
Supporters of the MP argue that this is unjust and undemocratic.
They claim the MP has made significant sacrifices for the party, including flying back to Ghana four days after giving birth to a child overseas to vote for the speaker of Parliament and participate in other parliamentary activities in support of the government.
In numerous seats in the Eastern region, the election of the NPP’s polling station executives and electoral area coordinators has been plagued by denial of nomination forms to hopefuls, confusion, and court injunctions.
