A disturbing report claim that an armed gang on Monday, April 26, killed about five soldiers in Omelema community in the Abia Local government area of Rivers state.
Punch reported that the gunmen who came from a river marched straight to a military lodge in the area and opened fire on soldiers, killing about two of them immediately.
It was gathered that the gunmen killed two soldiers on the spot.
However, the tragic development is yet to be confirmed by Major Charles Ekeocha, the spokesman for the 6 Division, Nigeria Army Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The gunmen launched the attacks around 8 pm on Saturday, April 24. The newspaper reports that four policemen and two soldiers were killed in the attack.
Meanwhile, the governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, had said the attacks on police formations in the southeast zone were carried out by criminals and bandits.
Umahi made the statement on Tuesday, April 20, in Abakaliki, the state capital. Due to security reasons, he told herdsmen to stay away from the state for now.
He stated that many herdsmen have left the state of their own volition. The governor denied evicting the herders from Ebonyi.
