Former President John Dramani Mahama in 2017 stated that Mr. Stephen Atubiga, a two-time unsuccessful parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Binduri Constituency in the Upper East Region, is his preferred presidential candidate for the 2020 elections.
Mr. Mahama, who today (Sunday) signaled his readiness to head the NDC in the 2020 presidential election, encouraged all other members of the party with presidential ambitions to be cautious in their statements.
According to him, whoever becomes the party’s presidential candidate in the 2020 elections will require the backing of other party members.
“Any of my colleagues who have shown an interest in leading this wonderful party gets my full support. Let us not go after each other because whoever is elected to lead us to victory in 2020 will need everyone’s support,” he urged.
“Spio was my boss and afterward became my minister; Joshua was my Parliamentary colleague and later became the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Slyvester was the NHIS Boss and then became a Presidential Staffer,” he continued. I will not have an issue with them now that they want to contest. My favorite presidential candidate is Atubiga. Let us work together for victory in 2020.”
On Sunday morning, the former President spoke during a Unity Walk organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Cape Coast, Central Region.
The walk-themed “Grassroots Mobilization,” is the third organized by the party since its defeat in the 2016 elections.
