Alpha Conde the 83-year-old President struggled for years to restore democratic governance but after winning power, he destroyed it. The military usurpation came less than a year after Conde defeated his opponents a third term in an election characterized by fraud and ballot stuffing.
The ousting of President Alpha Conde in Guinea crowned a smooth fall from dignity for the veteran resistance leader and human freedoms educator who analysts assert failed to live up to promises to provide democratic improvement and ethnic unity.
The deposed Alpha Conde was noticed in a video disseminating on social media as he was being seized in detention after the military took hold of power on that Sunday, declaring that it had discontinued the constitutional rule and close the country’s borders, and compelled a nationwide curfew.
The junta came less than a year after Conde won a third presidential term in a violently disputed election last October following the adoption of a new constitution in March 2020 that allowed him to sidestep the country’s two-term limit, provoking mass protests.
Dozens of people were killed during demonstrations, often in clashes with security forces. Hundreds were arrested, including opposition leaders.
Col. Doumbouya is a Conde man, he was placed in charge of the Special Forces and specially trained to protect Conde. This is important to understand perhaps why the country seems to stand behind him and today he has demonstrated that he is a leader by visiting the Bambeto cemetery where the Martyrs of democracy are buried.
These victims were those who were k!lled during a violent protest of Alpha Conde’s third term bid.
