Six including boy, 4, killed in accident at Kwahu Atibie

Six persons including a four-year-old boy died following an accident that occurred at Atibie on the Odwenanoma stretch in the Kwahu South municipality of the Eastern Region.

The accident occurred on late Tuesday, May 25.

Three died on the spot while three others were pronounced dead on arrival at the Kwahu Atibie Hospital.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service, and the National Ambulance Service (NAS) had to remove bodies from the mangled vehicle.

Preliminary investigations indicated that a Rhino truck with registration number GW 5638-19 had a brake failure, lost control of the wheel, and veered into the concrete guard rails on the Atibie portion of the Kwahu Ridge, resulting in the accident.

The truck had on board nine passengers and loaded with chairs, canopies, and musical equipment.

They were returning from a funeral at Forifori in the Afram Plains South District, heading to Accra.

Three of the surviving victims who sustained varying degrees of injury are receiving medical care at the Kwahu Atibie Government Hospital.

Bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital, pending identification and autopsy.

The accident vehicle had been towed to the Nkawkaw Central Police Station for examination and testing.

Kwahu South Fire Officer DOIII Kwaakye Addo advised drivers to regularly check their vehicle’s maintenance and seek assistance from drivers who often ply the Kwahu Ridge.

Nkawkaw Division Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service DSP Foster Asante cautioned drivers to adhere to road regulations.
