The Overlord of the Waala Traditional area, Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, has organized a Unification Games for the military and civilians as part of efforts to re-bond the two in the Upper West Region.
This was part of Wa Naa’s Eid-ul Adha celebrations, which were marked nationwide on Tuesday, July 20
On Thursday, July 1, a group of rampaging military officers brutalized unarmed civilians in the Upper West Region capital of Wa over a missing mobile phone belonging to another officer.
Some residents were traumatized after the brutality and others are yet to recover.
The incident compelled the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who hails from the Region, to send Parliament’s Select Committee on Defence and Interior to investigate the issue despite a similar investigation by the Military High Command and the Ghana Police Service.
The Command and government have both apologized to the chiefs and people of Wa while the officers found culpable have been punished.
While some have been detained to serve 30 days, others have been demoted. Others still have been transferred out of the Region.
As part of the Eid-ul Adha celebration, Naa Pelpuo IV organized the Games involving the army and some selected civilian groups.
The competing teams included the media, the army, butchers and Magazine XI.
They engaged in both football and “tug of peace” on Friday, July 23 with the finals scheduled for next week.
The Army XI defeated the Media XI 2-1 to book a place in next week’s final while Magazine XI also defeated Butchers XI 1-0.
In the Tug of Peace, Media XI were eliminated by the Magazine XI while Butchers XI also eliminated Army XI 2-0 .
All finals will take place next Friday at the Yakuba Park.
The event was hugely patronized with hundreds of residents of Wa gathering at the Tendamba JHS Park for the historic games.
Many believed that the event has actually restored peace and unity between the military and civilians in a grand style.
