It is true that in a democratic setting a culture of silence can thrive. That culture of silence can be curated by social backlash on opinions as well as social disgust. It can also be effectively facilitated by the use of “army critics”. But no advocate of free speech should ever decide to be QUIET because of this.

Progress rarely happens without conflict or a clash of sorts especially in the arena of speech and a contest of ideas. You can’t possibly sift through what works and what does not work without presenting it to effective and rigorous public discourse.

So anyone who decides to keep quiet because of fear of being responded to is only signaling that he or she believes that his speech should be above reproach.

Many Ghanaians are of the view that the current happenings in the country are creating hardships and anybody who dares speak against the system is targeted.

One of such is the young and vibrant Asante Oyokohene Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, a FixThecountry convener who has shockingly expressed his dissatisfaction at the ruling of his own New Patriotic Party especially with Nana Addo in charge as President.

Speaking on Onua TV, as a guest the vociferous gentleman posited “No one can speak freely anymore either out of shame, fear or just plain hypocrite to admit the obvious. The Akans are the bane of this country.”

“We know the truth and always churn out lies to glorify our own. This leadership is the worse and if this bizarre governance is the reason we voted against Mahama, then we must apologize to him.’
